Every horse at CATS Ranch, carries a story of survival. These are not nameless animals—they are former lesson horses whose barns closed when riding programs dried up. They are the gentle ponies who taught your children to ride, now discarded. They are racehorses abandoned when they stopped turning profits. They are foals born into unmanaged herds, facing a one-way trip to slaughter before they’ve even had a chance to live.
Each year, over 20,000 American horses are shipped across U.S. borders to be slaughtered in Mexico and Canada. Once crammed into overcrowded trailers, they endure long, terrifying journeys—often without food, water, or rest—only to be killed for meat in foreign markets. Many were once beloved companions. Now, they are forgotten.
CATS Ranch is changing that.
Through our compassionate rescue program, we give these majestic animals not just a second chance—but a renewed purpose. At our sanctuary, horses heal alongside humans through equine-assisted therapy, helping people struggling with grief and individuals with neurodivergent needs find peace and connection.
But rescue alone isn’t enough. That’s why CATS Ranch is a proud advocate for the SAFE Act (Save America’s Forgotten Equines)—a bipartisan bill that would permanently ban the slaughter and export of American horses for human consumption. Until this bill becomes law, thousands more will suffer.
The reality is

Every year, over 20,000 U.S. horses—including beloved lesson ponies, retired racehorses, and even newborn foals—are shipped to slaughter in Mexico and Canada. Many were once cherished family companions. Now, they face brutal transport and inhumane deaths.
CATS Ranch rescues these horses and gives them a second chance through healing sanctuary care and equine therapy programs. We also fight for lasting change by advocating for the SAFE Act, which would permanently ban horse slaughter.
- 92% of slaughter-bound horses are healthy and could be rehomed.
- Your donation or time can save a life.
